A: The slight differences between ski jackets and snowboard jackets are mainly due to style and fit. Regular to Loose Fit: In the past, snowboard jackets had a looser, baggier fit than ski jackets. While snowboard jackets can still have a tapered waist, they're typically not fitted.

A: Available with padded insulation or as a "hard shell" waterproof, a proper ski jacket is a must. Look for one with a "snow skirt" which fastens around your waist, and a pocket on the wrist to keep your lift pass in. Borrowing is an option, but jackets can be found locally without huge expense.

A: For most people in most conditions, all you need is a base layer, a mid-layer and an outer ski/snowboard jacket. You will be plenty warm enough but, if you suffer from the cold or if you are skiing in North America, where conditions can be a lot colder than in Europe, you may also need a second mid-layer.

A: These longer sleeves will help to keep your arms warm and prevent cold air from seeping into your jacket. Additionally, longer sleeves can also provide added protection against snow and wind, keeping you dry and comfortable throughout your day on the slopes.

A: Most ski jackets are waterproof instead of water-resistant, specifically to keep the wearer dry. Down winter jackets can struggle in wet conditions.
